Factors to consider when choosing DK weight yarn

• Gauge on the label. DK is category 3 and usually knits at about 21 to 24 stitches per 4 inches. Check the ball band against your pattern.
• Fiber. Wool blends are warm and forgiving. Superwash merino is soft enough for babies and goes in the machine.
• Needle size. Most DK patterns use US 5 to 7 needles. An interchangeable set lets you swatch at more than one size.
• Yardage. DK balls hold more yards than worsted of the same weight, so buy by yards.
• Dye lot. Buy the whole project at once.

What DK Yarn Weight Means

DK is short for double knitting. The name comes from the UK, where it described a yarn about twice as thick as a fine 4 ply. Today it is simply the name of a standard weight.

On the Craft Yarn Council weight system, DK sits in category 3, labeled "light". The same category also covers yarn sold as light worsted. In Australia and New Zealand, the same thickness is sold as 8 ply.

Do not read too much into the ply number. Ply names used to describe how many strands were twisted together. Now they are just weight names. An 8 ply yarn may have fewer than eight strands.

How to Tell if an Unlabeled Yarn Is DK

Lost the label? You can still work out the weight.

1. Count wraps per inch. Wrap the yarn around a pencil or ruler, side by side without gaps or overlaps. Count how many wraps fit in one inch. About 11 to 15 wraps points to DK.
2. Check yards per gram. If you know the weight and length, divide yards by grams. DK often lands around 2.3 to 2.6 yards per gram.
3. Knit a swatch. Try US 6 (4mm) needles. If you get about 22 stitches per 4 inches and the fabric feels right, it is likely DK.

Wraps per inch is a rough guide. Fluffy yarn gives fewer wraps than a smooth yarn of the same weight.

What to Knit With DK Yarn

• Baby clothes and blankets: soft, light and quick enough to finish before the baby grows.

Stitch pattern matters as well. The label gauge is for stockinette. Garter, ribbing and cables all pull in or spread out differently.

Wash your swatch before you measure. Some DK yarns relax and grow after a soak, especially superwash wool and plant fibers. Measure the washed swatch, then change needle size until it matches your pattern.

Substituting DK for Other Weights

Swapping one DK for another is usually easy. Match the gauge on the label, check the fiber, and swatch.

Using DK in a worsted pattern is harder. DK is thinner, so the fabric comes out smaller and lighter. You can sometimes make it work with larger needles, but the fabric may turn loose and holey.

Using worsted in a DK pattern gives a thicker, bigger result. It rarely works for fitted garments without resizing.
